Making Kawakawa tea

Kawakawa is a medicinal Maori herb. Today we learned how to make kawakawa tea with Mr Bennett. It was a fascinating experience looking at the plants in Owairaka School's medicinal garden.

This week is the beginning of Matariki, the Maori new year festival. Matariki (the Pleiades) is the Maori name for the cluster of stars. When it rises in the north-eastern skies in late May or early June, it signals to Maori that the new year will begin.
